Wittnauer Futurama 1,000 Doble Retrograde ref.4510 33x48 mm from 1969

One of the most unconventional watches of its era, the Wittnauer Futurama 1,000 perfectly captures the late-1960s fascination with space travel and the future. Its elongated 33 × 48 mm case, two tone dial and unusual method of displaying the time make it feel more like a miniature mechanical instrument than a conventional wristwatch.

Instead of completing a traditional rotation around the dial, the hours and minutes are displayed on two separate arcs. The hour hand travels along the left side and the minute hand along the right; upon reaching the end of their respective scales, each hand instantly flies back to its starting position. The deeply recessed date display completes its distinctive, almost cockpit-like appearance.

Powered by an automatic Swiss movement, the Futurama was an exceptionally daring watch for 1969—created decades before retrograde displays became closely associated with modern independent and high-complication watchmaking.
