Dating to the 1930s, this Universal Genève ref. 7122 is a remarkably complete Art Deco wristwatch preserved in genuine new-old-stock condition. Measuring only 17mm across, its diminutive proportions and looks somehow work for a mens watch today, the sharp defined rectangular form gives it a surprisingly contemporary presence.
The brushed Staybrite steel case frames an exceptionally attractive salmon dial, rendered in a warm, dusky pink tone and Art Deco numerals. Its design recalls the Cartier Tank Normale, placing the watch within the same broader design language that shaped some of the most enduring rectangular watches of the early twentieth century.
The watch remains fitted to its original stitched lizard strap and corresponding Universal Genève buckle. The use of an exotic leather reinforces the refined character of the piece, as lizard and alligator straps were closely associated with elegant, high-quality watches during this period. It is an appropriate detail for Universal Genève, a manufacturer that, during the 1930s, competed alongside some of Switzerland’s most prestigious watchmakers. It is also accompanied by its original presentation box and price tag.
