1969 was a landmark year for Heuer with the introduction of its first automatic chronographs—the Autavia, Carrera, and Monaco. However, Heuer wasted little time in expanding its chronograph lineup around the newly developed Calibre 12 movement. The first of these new models were the Calculator, a massive chronograph featuring both external and internal slide-rule bezels, and the Montreal, a bold design that would pave the way for a new generation of Heuer chronographs, perfectly capturing the style and spirit of the 1970s. Introduced in 1972, the Montreal embodied the flamboyant aesthetic of the decade: its oversized case featured an entirely new geometry with alternating brushed and polished finishes, while the dial, inner bezel, and hands showcased vivid, contrasting colors.

As the 1970s progressed, Heuer began naming many of its chronographs after famous racing circuits—such as Daytona, Monza, and Jarama. The Montreal, however, was named to evoke the energy, modernity, and cosmopolitan character of one of the world's most vibrant cities. Montreal had hosted the Expo 67 World's Fair in 1967 and was later selected to host the 1976 Summer Olympic Games, reinforcing its reputation as an international destination. Formula One would not arrive in Montreal until 1978, when the artificial island originally built for Expo 67 was reconfigured to create the circuit that would eventually become the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
