This iconic racing chronograph is forever linked to one of the coolest actors of all time: Steve McQueen, who wore a Monaco in Le Mans. At 40mm, its square stainless steel case has plenty of presence, with the pushers on the right and the winding crown on the left. The blue dial is in fantastic condition—around 95%, by our estimate—with red accents and matching patina across the hands and hour markers. A little lume is missing from the markers at three and nine o’clock. The case remains unpolished.
Known as the “1133B Transitional,” this is a particularly interesting version of the Monaco. Produced for a short period around 1969–1970, it reflects a change made after the American market found the term “Chronomatic” confusing. The model kept the metallic gloss and squared-off hands of the earlier Chronomatic version, but introduced cream-colored lume and the “Automatic Chronograph” wording that would appear on later Monaco models.
That combination captures a small but significant moment in the Monaco’s evolution. It also makes the 1133B Transitional an earlier and rarer example of later Monaco watches bearing the “Automatic Chronograph” name just as this one but with different dial finish and handset.
