Rolex King Midas Early 2nd Series ref.3580 White Gold from 1973
Rolex King Midas Early 2nd Series ref.3580 White Gold from 1973
The King Midas was presented in 1962 as a limited edition and was designed by Gerald Genta with the shape of the Greek Pantheon, hence the asymmetrical design of the watch that simulates the design of the Pantheon and its columns. Interestingly, the crown was placed on the left side to represent Midas, who turned everything he touched with his left hand into gold according to the stories of Greek Mythology. The watch has a great weight, almost 200 grams of solid gold, which caused this piece to have a price a third higher than a Day-date when it was launched.
The ref. 3580, which had a short production run and was actually made in fewer numbers, than the first series making it even more rare. The ref. 3580 can be found from production number 800 onwards up to No. 1200, and it was thought that 500 total were produced, with a small number in white gold and the majority in yellow gold.
The references 3580 and 9630 are nearly identical, with the primary distinction being the case side engraving. In the first series, this engraving features a unique sans-serif design. Interestingly, this particular example, being one of the first 40 watches from the second series, also showcases the same distinctive sans-serif engraving typically associated with the first series.
One of the most impressive aspects of the King Midas is the manual production, each model carefully crafted by highly skilled goldsmiths which of course makes each model slightly different in terms of weight and finish.
