Rolex GMT Master "Pepsi" Matte Dial mk1 ref.16750 from 1980

The 16750 is what Rolex collectors know today as a transition model. The early versions had a matte dial, just like this one.

Smart collectors were drawn to Reference 16750 because it was practically identical to the classic 1675 on the outside, but featured a more modern and improved movement inside.

In an effort to keep up with the competition, Rolex introduced new movements in the 1970s with higher beat frequencies and quick change dates. With the updated Caliber 3075 movement, the 16750 had a higher beat frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (now the modern standard), and the quick set date was a welcome convenience as it provides practicality to the watch.

With a short production run (only eight years) and its own cult following, Reference 16750 deserves to be considered a classic in its own right, and not just as a more affordable alternative to the 1675.
