Rolex GMT Master ll Ref.16710 "Coke" Full-Set from 2000

Manufactured from approximately 1989 until 2007, the reference occupied a unique position in Rolex history as the final GMT-Master II to feature a traditional aluminum bezel insert before the introduction of the ceramic-bezel generation.

This particular example, produced in 2000, belongs to what many enthusiasts consider the sweet spot of the reference. By this period, Rolex had already transitioned to Super-LumiNova, eliminating the tritium lume found on earlier examples while retaining all of the vintage charm associated with the classic aluminum bezel and hollow end-link bracelet. The iconic black and red bezel insert, affectionately nicknamed the "Coke," was offered alongside the black and red-and-blue "Pepsi"

Technically, the 16710 represented a significant advancement over its predecessor, the GMT-Master Reference 16700. While both references shared the robust Caliber 3185 movement architecture and identical 40mm Oyster case dimensions, the GMT-Master II incorporated Rolex's independently adjustable 12-hour hand. This innovation allowed users to track three time zones simultaneously when used in conjunction with the rotating 24-hour bezel, whereas the GMT-Master 16700 could only track two. This seemingly small improvement transformed the GMT-Master II into a far more practical tool watch for frequent travelers.

Compared to the earlier GMT-Master II Reference 16760 "Fat Lady" introduced in 1983, the 16710 featured a slimmer and more wearable case profile. The reference is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3185, a COSC-certified automatic movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with approximately 50 hours of power reserve. Renowned for its durability and ease of service, the movement became a benchmark for reliability in rolex history. Later examples produced near the end of the reference's lifespan would receive the updated Caliber 3186, making the Caliber 3185-equipped watches representative of the classic era of the 16710.
