The Rolex Explorer I ref. 14270 is one of the purest neo-vintage watches Rolex has ever produced. Manufactured between 1989 and 2001, the reference 14270 was the first Explorer to feature a sapphire crystal and the in-house Calibre 3000 — a movement that marked the beginning of a new mechanical era for the collection.

This particular example is fitted with a later Rolex service dial with LumiNova and matching service hands. The reason you might choose this watch over a later ref.114270 is the bracelet. The 14270 is fitted with the ref. 78360 bracelet with hollow center links and standard clasp, which conforms to the wrist more naturally than the later ref. 78690 bracelet that became standard on the 114270.

In other words, you get what is, in my opinion, the most comfortable and modern-feeling "vintage-style" Rolex bracelet, without solid end links, paired with the robust Calibre 3000 and the practicality of a Super-LumiNova dial. For me, it is the perfect everyday watch for the collector who appreciates mid-size Rolex sports models.
