Rolex Day Date "Bark" ref.1807 with RSC from 1967

The Rolex Day-Date reference 1807 represents one of the most distinctive and considerably less common variations of the classic four-digit Day-Date.

With serial number 1,590,139, this example dates to approximately 1967, placing it relatively early within the production of the reference.

Where the reference 1803 features Rolex's traditional fluted bezel and polished center links on its President bracelet, the 1807 received Rolex's unusual “bark” treatment. The bezel was engraved with an irregular textured pattern resembling the surface of tree bark, with the same finish repeated across the center links of the President bracelet. The result is considerably more tactile and jewelry-like than the conventional 1803.

This example is particularly elegant thanks to its silver dial, which provides a restrained contrast against the warmth and texture of the yellow-gold case and bracelet. Rather than making the watch more extravagant, the monochromatic dial allows the unusual bark finishing to become the defining feature.

The reference 1803 became the quintessential vintage Day-Date and was produced in substantial numbers throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The 1807 was a much more specialized variation, produced alongside it for clients seeking something more distinctive. Consequently, surviving examples are encountered considerably less frequently today, particularly when accompanied by the correct bark-finished President bracelet.

Condition is especially important with the reference 1807. Unlike a conventional polished or fluted surface, the bark pattern can gradually lose its definition through decades of wear and repeated polishing. Examples retaining a strong, clearly defined texture on both the bezel and bracelet are therefore particularly desirable.
