Rolex Day-Date 18038 Wood Dial from 1981
Rolex Day-Date 18038 Wood Dial from 1981
Burl wood or Burr is an outgrowth on a tree, often knot-shaped, caused by misshapen growth. It looks unprepossessing on the outside but gorgeous on the inside. Instead of perfect growth rings, the nerfs twist, spiral, and swirl each in their own way, creating a very unique wood grain pattern.
There are five versions of the Rolex wooden dial made up of different woods, including Sequoia, Mahogany, Birch, Madrona, and Walnut. In the Birch or Madera de Abedul dials in Spanish, there are two variants, the golden text "gilt print" and the black text "black print," the present watch being the rarer variant composed of a light-colored wooden dial and black text. This reference 18038 piece has a unique quick adjustment feature (3055 caliber) and an 18k yellow gold fluted bezel.
