Patek Philippe Nautilus ref.5800/1A-001 38.4mm from 2006

Released in 2006 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus, the reference Patek Philippe Nautilus 5800/1A-001 is one of the rarest and most desirable modern Nautilus models ever produced. Manufactured for approximately one year, it marked the return of the mid-size Nautilus after the discontinuation of the reference 3800. It is believed that only around 1,000 examples were produced; for comparison, approximately 5,000 examples of the legendary Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700 were made.

Measuring 38.4mm in diameter and only 7.8mm thick, the 5800 offers what many consider the ideal Nautilus size. While the previous reference 3800 measured 37.5mm, the additional 0.9mm makes a surprisingly noticeable difference on the wrist. Anyone as obsessive about proportions as us watch collectors tend to be knows that even a single millimeter can completely transform the wearing experience. The result is a watch that retains the elegance of the mid-size Nautilus while offering greater wrist presence and versatility.

The reference 5800 was also technically significant, introducing Patek Philippe’s in-house Calibre 330 SC to the Nautilus collection. Visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback, the movement features a beautifully finished 21k gold rotor decorated with Geneva stripes and serves as a bridge between the older 3800 and the later 5711. Equally notable is its monobloc steel case construction, a design element inspired by the earliest Nautilus references and unique in modern production models.

Further, the 5800 features the updated bracelet clasp design later seen on the celebrated 5711, making it a compelling blend of vintage proportions, modern engineering, and exceptional rarity. In many ways, it anticipated the market's growing preference for slightly smaller Nautilus models, a trend recently reaffirmed by the release of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5811/1P, which offers a more restrained interpretation of the classic Nautilus design for modern collectors.
