Introduced in 1969 and remaining in Patek Philippe’s catalogue until approximately 1982, the reference 3578 was offered in both 18k yellow and white gold. It is an exceptionally unusual creation from a manufacture traditionally associated with restrained, classical design.
At first glance, its silvered sigma dial appears almost austere, displaying only four 18k white-gold hour markers accented with vivid blue lacquer. Yet the simplicity of the dial is contrasted by the watch’s far more experimental construction: deep-blue lapis lazuli is incorporated into the sides of its 30.5 mm case, while an intricately textured white-gold bracelet integrates into the overall design.
The result feels conservative and daring at the same time. Its clean dial, precious-metal construction and elegant proportions remain unmistakably Patek Philippe, while the bold use of ornamental stone and integrated bracelet recalls the highly creative work produced by Piaget during the same period.
