The example we have here has developed a stunning and one-of-a-kind tropical patina on its dial. Once jet-black, it has now transformed into a rich gradient of browns that shift beautifully under the light — from creamy milk chocolate to deep saddle leather tones. All Speedmaster dials originally left the factory black, but select production batches possessed the rare chemistry that allowed them to age into this warm hue over time. Factors like sunlight, humidity, and regional climate are thought to influence this transformation. The result, in this case, is nothing short of breathtaking — truly the most beautiful Speedmaster dial I’ve ever seen.

Speaking in Speedmaster terms, this watch is a true Pre-Moon example. The movement bears a 31,xxx,xxx serial number, perfectly consistent with 1969 production. Both the caseback and bracelet are stamped “69,” confirming full period correctness. It also retains the desirable DON (Dot Over 90) bezel, showing a pleasing degree of color fading that enhances the watch’s originality. The dial lume has aged beautifully to a rich mustard tone—100% original, unrestored, and completely untouched—adding to the remarkable integrity and authenticity of this exceptional piece.
