Omega Seamaster ref.2576-4 primera edición de 1949
To celebrate Omega's centenary, Omega's sales director, Adolphe Vallat, asked Bannwart to develop a robust, waterproof sports wristwatch. Bannwart felt that Vallat didn't give him enough time, so he presented one of his case designs with the comment "too clumsy." To Bannwart's surprise, Vallat was delighted. René Bannwart is considered the father of the Omega Seamaster.
The result was the Seamaster family. The Omega Seamaster originated from watches supplied to the British Royal Air Force during World War II. The 1948 civilian version of the pilot's watch featured a waterproof case (up to 50 meters), a screw-down case back with lead gaskets, reinforced crystal, a silver dial with polished Arabic numerals, and riveted dagger indexes. The version with small seconds, also available as a certified chronometer, contained the new automatic Calibre 28.10 RA RG-343 "Calibre 342".
The Omega Seamaster is undoubtedly one of Omega's most important watches. From classic chronographs of the 1970s to modern diving tools and vintage-inspired re-editions, it brought all the innovations to a single product line and is therefore essential to understanding the history of manufacturing in Bienne.
This particular watch is the first edition of the Omega Seamaster, and it is worth noting that it is the most attractive variation, as the watch stands out thanks to its "Breguet" numbers, dagger indexes with square Radium application, "Big-Seconds" second hand, and aged Radium-filled hands.
A specimen that is not seen every day, a true piece of Omega's history, and an excellent investment for the most avid collectors.
