At 39mm in diameter, this Omega ref. 2545-1 was genuinely oversized for its era. Dating from the mid-century period, its dimensions would have been remarkably imposing when most gentleman's watches were considerably smaller. Today, however, the proportions feel almost unexpectedly contemporary.
The case itself is particularly unusual, finished in rose gold with an exceptionally substantial 80-micron gold layer. This is far heavier than the thin gold plating commonly encountered on vintage watches and gives the case much of the warmth and visual presence associated with solid rose gold.
Inside is the Omega caliber 263, a manually wound movement belonging to the celebrated 30mm family. These movements are among the foundations of Omega's mid-century reputation, valued for their relatively simple architecture, robustness and excellent chronometric potential. In a watch this large, the traditional hand-wound movement and time only center seconds dial make for a particularly pure expression of Omega's postwar watchmaking.
What truly separates this example, however, is its preservation. The watch remains in New Old Stock condition and is accompanied by its original Omega strap and box.
Vintage time-only Omega has quietly become an increasingly desirable area of collecting. For years these watches remained relatively undervalued compared with other brands, despite offering excellent movements, beautiful mid-century design and enormous variety.
