IWC has been a clear leader in the development of pilot watches. In 1994, the company paid tribute to its Mark XI with a Mark XII model (3241). This civilian watch was based on the design of the Mark XI but with a modern automatic movement and a date function. The name "Mark XII" was taken from its military predecessor. To emphasize the difference between the historic watch and the new collection, IWC used Roman numerals for this model instead of Arabic numerals. The IWC Mark XII was replaced by several other IWC pilot watches, all designated with the name "Mark". Since 13 and 14 are unlucky numbers in some cultures, IWC introduced a Mark XV model (IW325301) in 1999, followed by the Mark XVI (IW325501) in 2006, and then the Mark XVII (IW326501) in 2012. All of these were time and date watches, and even in 2016, the release of the Mark XVIII (IW327009) watch had a date function and a scaled 41mm steel case.

It wasn't until 2019 that Hodinkee teamed up with IWC to launch this Special Edition which pays a worthy tribute to the 1948 Mark XI with its 39mm case and dateless dial, and incorporated stylized hands just like the 1948 Mark XI with its square hour hand, as well as the removal of text at the bottom of the dial. These two brands couldn't miss the opportunity to innovate with this model, so it was made with a Ceratanium® case, which is a material fully developed in-house by IWC that is as scratch-resistant as ceramic and as light and durable as titanium. Its color is so special that it's registered by Pantone as IWC Ceratanium®, and without a doubt, it is the best version of the IWC Mark since its launch in 1948. With a production of 500 pieces, this watch is already a classic acclaimed by experienced collectors, just 3 years after its launch.
