Hamilton Otis Reverso de 1938
Hamilton Otis Reverso de 1938
Looking to take advantage of Alfred Chauvot's innovative reversible case design, Hamilton produced the Otis in 1938. However, the design of the Otis infringed upon another watch manufactured by Swiss company Jaeger-LeCoultre, which also made its Reverso under Chauvot's patent. As expected, Hamilton and JLC soon found themselves embroiled in a lawsuit. In the end, after three years in court, JLC won. Due to the terms of the lawsuit, Hamilton removed the Otis from its catalogs in 1940, making these watches a true rarity, perhaps even more so than the iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso of 1931.
This watch features a beautiful and striking engraving of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the inside of the reversible part of the watch, due to the strong Catholic influence in Mexican culture in the 1930s.
