Cartier Stepped Case Jumbo Cream Dial "New York" ref.15716 de 1975
Cartier Stepped Case Jumbo Cream Dial "New York" ref.15716 de 1975
This model is the Cartier Ref: 15176 (New York boutique version). This is the rarest variation of the Stepped Tank series. It was the only model that was gold-plated in a "brass" metal alloy case (the Paris and London variations were gold-plated on "steel" cases). It was produced around 1975-76 at the Cartier boutique in New York.
Reference 15715 was the only reference that had a "Four screws" caseback (the other models had snap-on cases), another important point to mention is the unusual elongated spinel cabochon crown and the slight area in the case design to protect the crown. This was the only reference that had serial numbers unlike the London and Paris versions. These case serial numbers in the stepped case should always start with the number 12-0 followed by their 4-digit case serial number. The other references did not have a serial number on the outside of the case and were lightly/superficially engraved with the Cartier mark and text. The Stepped Case Jumbo had an ETA 2512/Cartier caliber 78-1 movement signed ''Cartier Inc'' (Only the Cartier ETA calibers from the US market were signed Cartier Inc). Serial number research indicates that only 2500 pieces were produced before its production was discontinued by the end of 1976, making it an extremely rare and difficult watch to find in optimal condition due to the naturalness of its materials.
