This presented model is quite particular in its use of a mechanism that is the thinnest one can find in Cartier watches of this time. The caliber 21, designed by Frederic Piguet, held the title for the thinnest winding mechanism in the world for more than two decades. This caliber has been used by brands such as Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe in watches from the 1950s and 1960s.
