Cartier Santos Dumont Ladies ref.9605 from 1980s
Cartier Santos Dumont Ladies ref.9605 from 1980s
Men used to wear quite large pocket watches until Louis Cartier presented the Santos in 1904 as the first purpose-designed wristwatch for men. The Santos not only pioneered a complete reinvention of how we interact with our watches but also introduced a revolutionary aesthetic. Pocket watches that preceded it, and many wristwatches that followed, were round with fluid details. The Santos, on the other hand, had a strong and utilitarian aesthetic, with a square case and visible screws on the bezel. These design elements would be reintroduced almost 70 years later by Gerald Genta in the Royal Oak.
The Santos Dumont Mini is the female version of a highly acclaimed classic. However, in recent years, more and more Dumont Minis have been seen on the wrists of male collectors, unafraid to wear tiny watches while staying true to Cartier's aesthetic.
