Cartier Drive Ultra-Thin "Extra Flat" 39mm ref.3967 from 2019

The Drive de Cartier is a remarkably young design by the standards of the Maison. Introduced in 2016, it gave Cartier a new masculine silhouette: a softly curved cushion-shaped case inspired by the lines of classic automobiles. The original models were contemporary automatic watches, generally larger and more complicated. Just one year later, however, Cartier distilled the design into its purest and most traditionally elegant form with the Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat.

Reference 3967 is the classical expression of the collection. Its restrained 38 × 39mm case is crafted in 18k rose gold and measures only 6.6mm thick—approximately 40% slimmer than the original Drive. Cartier removed the date and seconds display, leaving only two blued-steel sword hands, Roman numerals and a subtle sunray-brushed silver dial. Inside is the hand-wound calibre 430 MC, an ultra-thin movement based on Piaget’s respected 430P architecture. The deliberate ritual of winding, closed caseback and perfectly judged proportions make the Extra-Flat feel more closely connected to Cartier’s great historic dress watches than to the rest of the modern Drive family.

Although sometimes described as a limited edition, this rose-gold WGNM0006 was part of the regular collection. It was the white-gold WGNM0007 that was individually numbered and limited to 200 examples. Nevertheless, the Drive Extra-Flat was produced for only a relatively brief period and is now discontinued, making it one of Cartier’s most compelling and still underappreciated modern designs.
