This 36mm Bucherer chronograph, dating to around mid 1940s, has a wonderfully distinctive case, with sharp, stepped lugs and a brushed finish.

The dial is a glossy black lacquer surface with applied Roman numerals and gilt text, with two subsidiary registers. It has the kind of depth and contrast that makes the watch feel amazing on the wrist.

The movement appears to be a Valjoux 23, though it may be another ébauche, so the exact calibre remains unconfirmed. Its finishing is utilitarian yet beautiful, with frosted brass plates and brushed levers. The highlight, however, is the regulator: a beautifully executed, old-fashioned Bosley type. Its circular center is held beneath the upper cap-jewel setting, allowing the lever to pivot coaxially with the balance staff. The curb pins and studs are particularly nice looking and very well executed.
