During World War II, the British Ministry of Defence commissioned twelve Swiss watchmakers to produce robust field timepieces for military use. The result was the legendary “Dirty Dozen” — twelve brands each delivering watches between 1944 and 1945 that met strict specifications: black dials with Arabic numerals, small seconds at 6 o’clock, luminous hands and markers, railroad-style minute tracks, hand-wound 15-jewel movements, water/shock resistance, and the “W.W.W.” caseback stamp plus the Broad Arrow emblem. The Buren Grand Prix (with its Caliber 462 movement) stands out among Dirty Dozen examples thanks to its in-house movement and design integrity. While many Dirty Dozen watches used outsourced or shared calibers, Buren built its own “Grand Prix” movement, giving it a technical edge. Because fewer Buren units were made (about 11,000) compared to some others, well-preserved pieces are rarer, making the Grand Prix more desirable for those seeking originality and quality.
